La forza del destino (The Force of Destiny) is an Italian opera by Giuseppe Verdi. The libretto was written by Francesco Maria Piave based on a Spanish drama, Don Álvaro, o La fuerza del sino (1835), by Ángel de Saavedra, Duke of Rivas, with a scene adapted from Friedrich Schiller’s Wallensteins Lager. Efter de politiska omvälvningarna 1859 hade Verdi bara liten tid för komposition – La Forza del Destino (1862, Ödets makt) är enda operan på några år. 1864 – 65 reviderade Verdi Macbeth och skrev en fransk grand opera Don Carlos (1867) efter Schillers dikt som trots en synnerligen invecklad handling, men tack vare melodirikedom Giuseppe Verdi (10 October 1813 – 27 January 1901) was the greatest of all Italian opera composers.

Verdi's Macbeth, with a libretto that adheres quite closely to the original play, was the composer's first Shakespearean work. (Verdi's final two masterpieces—Otello and Falstaff—were from Shakespeare as well.) Verdi was the greatest Italian opera composer – the best Verdi works feature 10 masterpieces including ‘Rigoletto’, ‘La Traviata’ and ‘Aida’. Librettist Antonio Somma worked with Verdi on completing a libretto for an opera based on Shakespeare's King Lear. This libretto was based on an incomplete one written by librettist Salvatore Cammarano before he died in 1852. During the last stage of his life, apart from revising earlier compositions, Verdi wrote several more operas including Aida, Otello, and Falstaff (his last composed opera before his death).

He was born near Busseto to a provincial family of moderate means, and developed a musical education with the help of a local patron.
